Regrets that she was unable to hear him speak, since her mother passed away the day before he arrived in chicago. But heard that he touched many people with his poetry. Sends him "My sould was lifted by it's wings" and asks to have it autographed by him.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
